New Executive Director Chosen
This page will be updated with information about NEWWA's executive director search.
Below is a message from our President, David Miller, sent to the membership in November 2018:
To our members and supporters:
As many of you know, we recently lost our executive director and dear friend, Steve Ryan, after a battle with cancer. Shortly after Steve’s diagnosis he took steps to assure that the staff and board of directors had a clear path to handle any issues that came before the association while he was out of the office receiving treatment. Kirsten King and Don Bunker were informally designated by Steve to directly handle any issues involving administration/communication (Kirsten) or facilities/education (Don) so that staff knew who to turn to. More recently, the board of directors formalized Kirsten and Don’s position titles as deputy executive directors of the association. Doing so provided staff two direct leadership paths to facilitate business as usual.
Since Steve’s passing on October 10th, an Executive Search Committee consisting of six current (and one former) board members was formed. The search committee had several discussions about how to proceed with the selection of a new executive director. The committee felt it was important to have an expedient and open process with critical staff input following the general guidelines of the NEWWA Succession Plan, last updated in 2014.
At their most recent meeting on November 14th the NEWWA board of directors accepted the committee’s proposed executive search process. The board of directors agreed that a formal process is necessary to best serve the membership and staff of the association in selecting its next executive director. As with the previous selection process, we have engaged Spano Pratt Executive Search to identify and vet prospective candidates. Given our recent experience with Spano Pratt leading to Steve Ryan’s hire, the fee is considerably less than it was 4 years ago. Our goal is to begin advertising for the position in December, close advertising mid-January, perform candidate screening and interviews in February, and make a final selection for ratification at a special board meeting in March.
Looking back over the past couple of years as Steve was working through his cancer diagnosis and treatment…the association did not miss a beat. Staff leadership has been and is being addressed efficiently and effectively. Each and every staff member is supporting one another and keeping our highly functioning operation running smoothly during stressful times. We are so fortunate to have our dedicated staff and the board will work equally hard to make this leadership transition as smooth as possible.
